2018 is well underway and it's time to take a long hard look at your credit score. Not looking so hot? Make a comeback with your credit score this year by employing a few simple steps toward effective credit repair. First off, it's important to know what's a good or bad credit score. Credit scores generally range between 300 and 850, with a higher score representing a lower risk and a lower score representing a higher risk, says My Fico. To put this into perspective, a score of 680 is good but a score of 720 is much better. A score of 800 to 850 is considered excellent. If your credit score is less than stellar, make improvements to it this year. It's never too late!
Your debt to credit ratio comes into play in terms of what you owe on your credit cards, along with the amount of available credit. Closing the gap on this ratio can help your credit score immensely. Bankrate suggests keeping your debt-to-credit ratio at 30 percent or lower. You can achieve this by paying down your balances and keeping them low.
We all have those nuisance bills that we wish we didn't have: credit cards, outstanding medical balances, etc. When it comes to these bills, especially credit cards with high interest rates, it's important to keep the balances low and pay them off. Remember, one late payment on a credit card, car loan or mortgage payment and your credit score will suffer. This is pretty significant, as US News and World Report says that your payment history is responsible for 35 percent of your entire credit score.
If you're like most people, you don't give your credit report a second thought until you go to get a loan or mortgage. However, it's best to keep updated on your current score each year by checking on reports put out by the three major credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Make it a point to review your credit report in depth to make sure all the information being reported is 100% correct. It's not uncommon for you to find mistakes, inaccuracies or unverifiable information being reported on your credit report. It is best to correct these mistakes now rather than later when you're approaching a bank for a mortgage.
If you just can't seem to get on a schedule and remember to make your payments every month, you're not only hurting your credit score, you're also adding to undue stress in your life. To make things easier, set up automatic payments for all your bills, from credit cards to student loans. The money comes right out of your checking account on a monthly basis so you don't even have to think about it.
If you've been having a tough time lately, whether financially or in regards to your personal life, you may have missed a payment or two. It happens to the best of us. These occurrences can put a crimp in your credit history. Remember to think of your credit history as a record of your financial behavior. All the good things you do for your credit will just make your credit better and better over time. Always pay on time, keep your balances low, and build a good record of your financial stability. Your hard work will reward you with a better credit score.
Boosting your credit score won't happen overnight, but you can resolve to make 2018 the year of your credit comeback!
